Subject: Urging you to not permit camping of animal circuses in your jurisdiction
I write to you from ___ organisation/ as an advocate of animal protection, to bring to your notice the illegal nature of operation of animal circuses.
All circuses performing with animals should be mandatorily registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) under the Performing Animals Registration Rules, 2001. However, most traveling circuses lack this registration, and even when registered, operate in violation of the terms of registration. Some of the violations include illegal trade in wild animals (including elephants, a schedule 1 species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972), illegal breeding, lack of medical care, torturous living conditions and active physical and mental abuse.
Circuses also routinely flout rules of inter-state transport, municipal rules, and mislead authorities to engage in illegal activities like child labor and human trafficking.
I am a part of the nationwide campaign “End Circus Suffering” initiated by the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) to eradicate the suffering of animals in circuses. So far, the campaign has freed animals from 7 circuses and facilitated stoppage of animal use in 17 circuses.
As an active member of the growing national consciousness against animal abuse in circuses, I strongly urge you to not issue camping permits to any circus in your jurisdiction. By doing so, you will be contributing to the lifelong freedom of thee 500+ suffering animals and to a more civilized society.
Trust that your office will be empathetic to the cause.
