3 monitor lizards rescued, 1 held

CHENNAI: Wildlife headquarters officials on Monday arrested a 54-yearold poacher and rescued three monitor lizards caught from Kandigai reserve forests near Tirupporur. Range officer V Mohan said the recovery was made following a tip-off. A senior wildlife officer said the blood and meat of monitor lizard and are in great demand. Last year, wildlife officials busted a gang having a large
collection of this species in Pudukottai and Sivagangai. Each live specimen is sold for 5,000 and the price goes up depending on the demand, Mohan said. .
Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (Southern Region) deputy director Uma said many animals protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 are traded online. It is increasing day by day. Another wildlife official said monitor lizards and pangolins are the most-wanted wildlife in the online trade. An exclusive cyber wing has to be formed in the wildlife department
to handle such cases, he said.
