3 puppies, dog die after consuming rat poison in Naigaon

MUMBAI: Three stray puppies and their mother were found poisoned to death in a housing society in Naigaon on Saturday. Animal lovers managed to save two other puppies who had also consumed poison. It is suspected the strays consumed rat poison placed at various spots in Gokuldam Society No 6, Naigaon (east). Building residents said staff from the pest control firm had placed rat poison in the gutters and garden due to the menace of rodents. Building resident, Nirupama Singh, who feeds the strays, alleged the society committee members had last month asked them to relocate the strays. “We had sought two to three months as the puppies were too small,” said Singh. She alleged rat poison was kept in the compound and parking lot where the strays loiter.
District animal welfare officer, Mitesh Jain, said care should have been taken while placing the rat poison as children and strays move around in the compound. He said a case under section 429 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act has been registered with the Valiv police against
unknown persons. Police said they will examine CCTV footage to ascertain if the puppies were intentionally poisoned. Pest control staff will also be questioned.
