Tinsukia: The carcasses of 15 Asiatic wild water buffaloes were recovered from Motapung Magori Beel on the fringes of Dibru Saikhowa National Park in Tinsukia district.
General secretary of Bahankhyam Unnayan Samiti, Niranto Gohain, said the buffaloes got stuck in water hyacinth in the lake and drowned. “Water hyacinth covers a large part of the lake and as the buffaloes entered the lake to graze, they got trapped. Locals tried to save the animals but in vain,” Gohain said. “The forest department should have taken precautionary measures.”
