HUBBALLI: The Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) is seeking a dedicated central police team to curb the menace of pigs. With the police commissionerate responding positively to the request, the HDMC will soon have a team for the security of its staff during the mission to catch stray pigs.
Lack of adequate police security has been a major during such special drives. Dr. Ravi Saligoudar of the HDMC veterinary department said that earlier, police were unable to provide security during these drives due to the heavy workload. “To overcome this issue, we requested the police commissioner to provide dedicated police staff for security purposes during our special drives,” he added.
Saligoudar hoped that the drive will gain momentum once the centralised police security is provided. “Our staff can work without any fear and act tough on anyone obstructing them during the pig catching drives. We require nearly 40 members, including senior officials and a platoon of CAR,” said Saligoudar.
According to sources, pig-catchers, who were threatened during special drives, now refuse to work for the HDMC, fearing assaults by owners of the straying animals.
Ravindra Gadade, DCP, law, and order, said a decision would be taken after discussion with the police commissioner. “We are always ready to provide security during any drives to make the city clean. However, we need to assess the feasibility of deployment of dedicated policemen for security purposes during pig catching drives,” he added.
