PONDA: Continuing its investigation in wild animal poaching by laying cable snares at Mhaisal, Panchwadi, in Ponda taluka, the forest department has appealed to people to reveal information about poachers.
An official said the information regarding the informant will not be disclosed.
Late Monday, the special forest protection team of North Goa forest division had rescued a five-year-old leopard from a cable trap at Mhaisal.
The leopard has been lodged at Bondla zoo for observation and treatment.
As per information released by the forest division on Tuesday, the wild animal was trapped in a snare prepared by a thin gear cable of a motorcycle and was attached to a tree. On combing the area, a team found a couple more such snares.
An inquiry has been instituted to nab the culprits. An offense will be registered against unidentified people under Section 7 of the Wildlife Protection Act for illegally laying cable traps (snares) for poaching wild animals, including wild boars, rabbits, said Ajay Jadhav, Ponda assistant conservator of forest (ACF).
