Karnataka: Anti-climax for Kambala?

The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are on a Kambala frenzy, but on Friday, the Supreme Court issued notices to the state government, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and the Animal Welfare Board of India after animal rights organisation PETA moved the top court, saying the amended new law is in violation of Animal Cruelty Act.
In the petition, PETA India said that the new amended state law is contrary to the object and purpose of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960. Further, it violates the right to life of animals protected under Article 21. “The SC has already ruled that these races are illegal, Bulls used in kambala events are pushed, dragged, beaten, and forced to race until their bodies overheat and they’re left frothing at the mouth,” said PETA India CEO Manilal Valliyate.
