PANAJI: Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) on Tuesday processed a shipment of livestock for the first time. A consignment of nearly 2,400 goats and sheep was exported to Saudi Arabia after the animals were transported from Gujarat to MPT by truck.
“The export of the goats was on a trial basis. If the customer is satisfied, we could have a shipment every month,” a senior MPT official said. He added that with MPT’s revenues dwindling, the port was looking to diversify its cargo operations.
India is one of the largest exporters of sheep and goat meat to the world. During 2017-18, it exported 21,906 tonnes of meat worth Rs 835 crore ($129 million).
Iron ore was the mainstay of MPT’s revenue till 2012 when mining first came to a halt. The port attempted to diversify into coal and coke, but even that has faced hurdles.
