KOLKATA: The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has started building a dog pound inside the cattle shelter complex in Action Area 1D, where stray dogs will be brought in and sterilized. The dog pound is being set up after strays snuck into Eco Park and bit a few visitors.
The dog pound will start operating in a month’s time and will have 11 blocks to house the strays. A separate room is also being constructed in the same compound for other emergency requirements. The strays will be sterilized by a few former government veterinary surgeons who are now appointed by NKDA.
On February 1, the authorities inaugurated an integrated pet creche and clinic, along with a sterilization and vaccination unit, in Action Area III of the township.
NKDA had earlier engaged an agency to conduct sterilization of strays, but the authorities noticed that there were loopholes in the process. “A team will be formed to catch strays and they will be sterilized by veterinary doctors with the help of trained staff. The animals will then be released,” an NKDA official said.
