RAIPUR: A white tiger named ‘Vijay’ died of suspected snakebite in the Kanan Pendari zoo of Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh, officials said on Friday, adding that the big cat was found dead in a cell.
Vijay was brought to the zoo from Delhi Zoological Park two months ago. Earlier, there were allegations that zoo workers were not paying adequate attention to animals and were violating the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) rules.
Zoo officials said that the carcass was disposed of and viscera sent to a lab in UP’s Rae Bareli for analysis to know the actual reason behind Vijay’s death. Primary autopsy report had said that the tiger died due to ‘cobra-bite’.
Insiders said that the tiger had died a day before but zoo authorities delayed the announcement.
Some time back, CZA had written to the Bilaspur zoo, raising concerns about the safety of animals.
Earlier, TOI had reported that health check-up of animals in the zoo should be done from time to time and they must be provided quality food. Kanan Pendari zoo was in the news in 2014 when 22 cheetahs were found dead.
