Coimbatore: A spotted male deer, which accidentally fell into a small pond on an agricultural field near Thalavadi in Erode district, was rescued on Monday.
According to a forest officer, Velusamy, of Kettavdi village, had set up a farm pond to irrigate potato crops on his agriculture land, which is located at least 2km from the reserve forest in Thalavadi forest range.
“On Monday, the deer, aged about 5 years, entered the field searching for food and fell into the pond,” the officer said.
When Velusamy visited the field, he found the deer struggling for its life in the pond. Immediately, he informed Thalavadi forest officials, who reached the spot and rescued the deer.
Later, the animal was released near an artificial waterhole inside the reserve forest. The official said the department has been taking steps to fill waterholes in the reserve forest to prevent animals from straying into the plains to quench thirst.
