LUCKNOW: Visitors to Lucknow zoo will be in for a treat in 2019 as the zoological park will see the arrival of new inmates under the animal exchange programme.
White tigers will come from Delhi zoo and will be paired with female white tiger Vishakha.
After getting the necessary approvals from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), Lucknow zoo will be welcoming a pair of Leopard cats and a Himalayan Black bear from Dimapur zoo in Nagaland.
CZA is the apex body for zoos in India and animal exchange programmes have to be approved by it. Besides, kangaroo’s country-cousin wallabies and flamingos from Zlin Zoo in the Czech Republic, too, are on the list of new inmates.
In addition, zoo authorities are hopeful of getting approval for bringing spectacled langur and pig-tailed macaque from Sepahijila Zoological Garden in Tripura.
Under the same arrangement, a hippopotamus from Bannerghatta National Park in Bengaluru is also on the list.
Talking about the efforts made to bring in new animals, Lucknow zoo director RK Singh said, “In 2018, some inmates due to old age or illnesses. This year, new animals will be an added attraction for the visitors. Moreover, in the next 2-3 months, we are hopeful of receiving 5-6 species of wild animals also.”
