The Pune Unit of People for Animals was started in 2005 and since its inception, has been focused on Law Enforcement for protection of animals and Animal Rescues and rehabilitation.
The unit currently runs and manages several animal care shelters in Pune and Panchagani. PFA took over the Pimpri Chinchwad Dog Pound in June 2012 and since then has reformed the place completely. Till now it has conducted 6,000 Animal Birth Control operations in the most professional manner. PFA was provided with 5 acres of land in Mapoli by a generous donor where an animal care centre is now in place. Animals that cannot be rehabilitated are sent here for life time care.
PFA also runs the Janice Smith Animal Care Center in Panchagani. The shelter is named after the Irish lady who ran her bungalow as the only animal care center in the region. The shelter has been refurbished and is now being developed into a regional animal care center. It plays a crucial role in helping sick and injured animals in the region covering Wai, Mahabaleshwar and Panchagani.
Animal Care Center, Pune: This is a new center that is currently under development at the Handewadi Near Pisoli. The Center is merely 10 kilometers from city center and has already handled some very talked about cases.
PFA Pune also takes up enforcement of animal laws and lifestyle change through its strategic units:
