The only scientific method to humanely reduce street dog populations is mass spay and neuters, commonly known as animal birth control (ABC). Through ABC programs, all the dogs within a community or region are sterilized and then released back to their territories. The result: dog breeding stops and their population declines. Another very important issue that comes up when it comes to India's street dogs is–Rabies. Its a genuine problem, Although the numbers are widely debated, the World Health Organization estimates that rabies kills about 20,000 people a year in India. That's 36 percent of rabies deaths worldwide. The publicly very visible anti-rabies vaccination (ARV) component of ABC programs helps build community support. When people have less reason to be fearful of dogs, they're less likely to want to destroy them. Hence one can clearly make out the importance of ABC and ARV when it comes to dogs.

One such request that came up to us was when Ms. Pravallika told us about the critical state of dogs in their area in which they were not being fed properly with clean drinking water or food. Also, she discussed the poor state of ABC and ARV programs in their area. FIAPO then decided to step in and to speak with the authorities for two main issues– First, To the government for setting up a State Level Monitoring Committee for Animal Birth Control(ABC) and secondly to propose a statewide Anti Rabies Programme(ARV). Two proposals on the same have been shared with CSA regarding these issues. The proposal for setting up a state-level committee for ABC comprised of the need, legal backing and core elements like the constitution, monitoring, and functioning of the same and the proposal for ARV included the need, initiation, and framework of the program. Along with this, we have also shared content in the regional language for creating awareness about these two important issues amongst the locals.
