Poisoned meat left on street to kill stray dogs

THRISSUR: The officials at the medical college police station at Mulankunnathukavu near here have registered a case following the complaints that a person had left poisoned meat waste on the street to kill stray dogs .

The complainants also allege that carcasses of the dead dogs had been dumped in a canal near the Medical college hospital and this has contaminated the water distributed for drinking in the area.

The complaints have been submitted by some people from the area who alleged their pet dogs died after accidentally consuming the poisoned meat left in the street. According to reports four pet dogs in the area had died in the recent days after eating poisoned meat during the morning stroll with the owners.

The SI at the station P P Joy said the case has been registered for cruelty to animals and for indulging in activities that could pose threat the public health.

Sally Kannan, the honorary animal welfare officer of the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), who has taken the initiative to get the complaints filed the body of one of the pet dogs was subjected to post-mortem at the veterinary college, Mannuthy. The visceral samples have been sent to chemical analysis laboratory at Kakkanad, she said.

The SI said the complainants have alleged that Sreeni Thazhathuvalappil , a farmer from the area had kept poisoned meat on the street to kill the stray dogs, which were disturbing his farming activities. However, when questioned, Sreenivsan denied the charges, the SI said.

We had no children even after 20 years of marriage, and I and my wife were rearing two dogs as our own children giving whatever we eat at home to them also,” said Ravi, whose seven year old dog died after accidentally consuming the poisoned meat.
